Clearly indebted to the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and many others from across the Atlantic, Anvil nonetheless played louder, faster, and heavier than their heroes, in the process laying the groundwork for the thrash movement that took over heavy metal's underground in the '80s. Yet unlike many of the furious West Coast thrashers that immediately followed them, Anvil were mostly out for a good time: their albums often featured borderline pornographic sex songs, and frontman Steve "Lips" Kudlow frequently took to the stage in a bondage harness and played guitar solos with a vibrator.

As you might know from my Instagram posts, I've recently restored and cleaned my workshop. Under a lot of trash, covered in dust, I found an old railroad track. I had no idea it was there and obviously I had no use for it. For that reason I decided to make a small anvil out of it. I always wanted to have a small one. First I went online and did some research about anvils. After I had an idea how it should look like I started to cut it in shape with the angle grinder. I milled the surfaces flat after a rough shaping with the angle grinder and drilled a hole in it. If you don't have access to a milling machine, you could also grind the surfaces clean with an angle grinder. Having the top surfaces finished I was able to start shaping the horn. First I cut of the biggest pieces with the angle grinder and then I started to shpae the horn. Rough shaping at first with the angle grinder, then smoothing out with a file and then sandpaper. To remove all the rust I decided to give it a quick sandblast. If you don't have access to a sandblaster you could also remove the rust with a wire wheel or just grind it all clean with the angle grinder. For rust protection I used cold bluing. I then sanded all the functional surfaces clean again. This also gave the whole thing a nice touch and some contrast. I'm more than happy how it turned out and I can't wait to start using it on future projects. I hope you like my work and the video. Canadian heavy metal band formed in the 70s and based in Toronto, Ontario. Initially known as Lips after the lead singer Steve "Lips" Kudlow. These guys never became major stars back in the 80's but after the movie The Story Of Anvil came out it in 2009 it brought the band back from obscurity and they've finally achieved some success. I've always been a fan of this band and have always bought their albums when they released one. They are still going strong and just released a new album titled Legal At Last in 2020.
Since I lost my old Anvil, I decide to make another one out of rusted Railroad track. It was not easy to make such perfect Anvil only with common tools. I put all my skills and desire to make this beautiful Anvil. In this video, I turn a Railroad Track into an Anvil using an Angle Grinder. This was a good metalworking project for me, I totally enjoyed doing this, it was one of those simple jobs I like, putting something on the workbench cutting some stuff off it, and cleaning it up a bit, and the job is done. Hahaha, Good times. I hope you enjoy my video of making an Anvil from a railway track. The finished weighed = 10kg (22 pounds) The main tools used, were an angle grinder, a 5-inch random orbital sander, and a bench vice. Hope you found something of use in my video or at least found it entertaining. "Made in U.S.A." Fisher-Norris was the first large scale manufacturer of anvils in the U.S, found in 1843. They used a patent process that welded a tool steel plate onto a cast iron body in the mold when the anvil was cast. Up until this time all good anvils were forged from wrought iron and faced with tool steel that was forge welded to the body.The Fisher process produced an economical and very servicable anvil. They are also much quieter than wrought or all steel anvils which ring like a bell. Fisher-Norris anvils are often called “City Men’s anvil” because they don’t ring. This 100 lbs example was probably made in WW2 era, it doesn’t have the Eagle logo, Fisher stampings or the weight numbers on it.
