This video covers what Lutris is and how you can use it to play Windows developed games on Linux from platforms other than Steam, such as EA Origin, Blizzard Battle.net, GOG or Epic Game Stores. This is made possible by using specialist Lutris scripts that automate the installation process and apply any tweaks or configuration to enable the game to run. It should be noted that Lutris will not work with games that typically use anti-cheat such as EAC and Battle Eye which does mean that games such as Destiny 2, PUBG and Fortnite will not work. To use Lutris, you must ensure you have installed the latest version of Wine including additional dependencies and the latest driver for you GPU that supports DXVK / Vulkan. Depending on your distribution, there will be different methods for doing this, so see below for installation instructions from the Lutris wiki. Install the latest version of Wine 🤍 Install the latest DXVK supported GPU driver 🤍 Install the latest version of Lutris 🤍 In summary, I recommend that you use Proton for your Steam library and use Lutris for everything else. #lutris #linuxgaming #tutorial

Play on Linux is a wrapper for Wine to play Windows games and applications on Linux Play On Linux manages all your Wine prefixes and other Wineisms so that running Windows applications and games is as easy as possible. POL isn't really affiliated with the Wine project, and doesn't attempt to re-engineer Wine or anything like that. It is literally a GUI on top of your Wine prefixes to make it easier to manage them. Wine stands for Wine is not an emulator, and runs on pretty much any distro of Linux, including Ubuntu. Lutris is another application that can install and launch Wine games for you but Lutris is more of a game launcher, whereas Play On Linux is more of a game manager. In this video, I tested out Skyrim and Star Wars Old Republic. I had some clips of Guild Wars 2 but they didn't make the cut. Skyrim was a little bit buggy, GW2 was a little bit choppy, but Star Wars was pretty much flawless. ~~ Support the channel! If you are going to play Windows games on Linux this is all you need to know. I go over the main aspects of creating a wonderful experience. Part 1: The Types -Native Steam (It just works) -Proton Steam (It just works on "compatible" titles, but protondb.com for others) -Lutris (Usually comes with some configuration) -Virtualized (Everything runs in a Virtual Machine and needs PCI Pass through) Part 2: What is Wine and why should I care -Wine is a compatibility layer -Proton is based on Wine -Almost everything that is a "Windows Application" can run to different extents Part 3: What type of system do you need? What works best? -nVidia cards work pretty good as long as they are relatively new and you are using their proprietary drivers -AMD is making an open source play and moving everything to be built into the kernel. So for future proofing, they will be a powerhouse, because everything is open source. However, they aren't there yet and need time to catch up. -A GPU card built in the last couple years that is DXVK compatible Support My Work - ►► Get notified of videos or live streams ➜ 🤍 ►► Chris Titus Tech Digital Downloads ➜ 🤍 ►► Product and Service Recommendations ➜ 🤍 ►► My YouTube Gear and Computers ➜ 🤍 Other Places to Find Me - ►► Titus Tech Talk ➜ 🤍 ►► Titus Tech Gaming ➜ 🤍 ►► Chris Titus Crypto ➜ 🤍 ►► Twitch ➜ 🤍 ►► Twitter ➜ 🤍 DISCLAIMER: This video and description contain affiliate links, which means that if you click on one of the product links, I’ll receive a small commission. So you're not running a virtual machine, or emulating the system, you HAVE a whole windows environment, except it's not developed by Microsoft, and you don't need a copy of windows to use it. Wine creates a fake C drive inside your home directory, in the .wine hidden folder, and stores everything here. Do note that Wine does NOT protect you from viruses. Ransomware and other weird malware can still access your fake C drive, and sometimes even the regular folders in your /home directory on Linux, so don't use it to try some weird stuff you downloaded off the internet, cause it's still not safe. Bottles is a graphical user interface that sits on top of Wine. It lets you handle each program in its own "Bottle", a bottle being a wine prefix, with different rules, dependencies, libraries, and settings, so each app can run optimally without risking breaking the other ones you're using. It also lets you use Proton to run games that aren't available on Steam, for example, or if you have boxed copies of various games. The first step to install anything will be to create a bottle to run the application in. The "+" button lets you do that, and you'll get a nice graphical window to let you pick between a Gaming focused bottle, which will have a lot of tweaks specifically for running games, an Application Bottle, with improvements for running desktop apps, or a custom one that has no specific tweaks, so you can experiment yourself. Just select the appropriate Bottle type, enter its name, and click the "Create" button that appeared in the top right corner. Once the Bottle is created, you can either straight up select an executable you'd have downloaded yourself, and run it, or you can go into more detail. For now, Bottles only has a few installers that are mostly gaming related, but that list can expand, as anyone can contribute one of these, so I'd be surprised if we didn't see a lot of installers appearing pretty soon, especially for the most used windows apps. These installers all have a rating, from platinum to bronze, letting you know how well the program will run, just like what you could find on protonDB. Platinum means it should run exactly as on Windows, and Bronze means it will run, but expect a few glitches here and there or some performance problems. If your favorite program doesn't have an automatic installer script yet, you can configure your own Bottle manually. Just create a Custom Bottle, and head over the the details page. Here, you'll find a ton of stuff you can configure or install. Link to article about MS Office on Linux: 🤍

I was very excited when I found out this was possible but I had a hard time picturing what it would look like. The possibilities for video output and mouse input were particularly confusing. I'm hoping this video will help some of you build the workstation you're most happy to use. I love talking about this so I'm hoping to get some comments. Using Lutris For Windows Games On Linux! | Install.sh S1:Ep5

In this episode, we use Lutris, a game launcher for Linux, to install and play some Windows games. Support the channel by becoming a Patron! 🤍 I made this video about Lutris specifically to replace that old video I made in 2017 about Play on Linux. Technically speaking, Play on Linux is still around and it *does* work but it is not great and Lutris is better in pretty much every regard. I used Pop_OS (which is based on Ubuntu) for this video because it comes pre-installed with everything you need to get Lutris up and running right out of the box. That's right - with Pop_OS no PPAs are required, no additional dependencies are required, and your display drivers will work straight out of the box. What's not to love about that?! Fun Fact: Lutris is written in Python 3.x whereas Play on Linux is written in Python 2.7. Running Windows Games On Linux? Try VMware Player Instead!

Disappointed at the lack of support or performance in using Wine to play Windows games on Linux? Give VMware Workstation Player a try! Wine can be a major pain to run on Linux, even when using a convenient wrapper or helper like Codeweaver's Crossover or Play On Linux. Sometimes games have critical bugs that require massive workarounds while other games simply won't work. If you have the machine for it, VMWare Workstation Player is possibly the best choice in bringing Windows gaming to Linux. Because you are virtualizing a real Windows install within your Linux install. It's like dual booting without having to boot! The games that I tested in this video were PlanetSide 2, EverQuest 2, and Skyrim. Both PlanetSide 2 and EverQuest 2 no longer run on Wine because of Battleye. Skyrim has a "Gold" rating on WineHQ which means it runs but requires a few hacks or tweaks to run properly. All 3 games run straight out-of-the-box in VMware. ~~ Support the channel!
