Welcome to part 1 of a video series describing how to set up a full network using OPNsense! This series is in response to a few requests that I received from my written guide on my website (🤍 In Part 1, I am going to describe the hardware I will be using in my example network and showing how everything will be physically connected. For visual learners or for those who would like a video companion for my written guide, I hope you find the information beneficial in building your own home networks! A big thanks to Jason's Lab (🤍 for contributing the Cisco switch and the Grandstream wireless access point so that I had extra hardware to demonstrate a full network build! Follow me on Twitter and Facebook 🤍 🤍 Description We already know about firewalls in our home; those routers that connect us to the internet, and how they provide security for our home networks. We also know about OPNsense, how to install it on a pc and setup VLANs. But we don’t know about much about how it’s primary purpose, securing our network with firewall rules. Well in this video, we get started with that, and cover the basics of firewall rules, and firewall rule creation. Firewall rules in OPNsense work like your standard port based rules. However, with plugins we can harness the power of Next Generation Firewalls, such as a Layer 7 Application based rules, allowing us to control application traffic, regardless of the port it’s running on. This falls in line with our general thinking of how we want to create policy, we want to control the traffic, not just the port. While both OPNsense and OpenWrt are firewalls and routers, there are also some notable differences, that make OPNsense my preferred firewall Operating System. You may have noticed when you log into OPNsense and see a warning message that a self-signed certificate is used for the web interface by default. You may replace the self-signed certificate with a free Let's Encrypt certificate using the ACME plugin. A self-signed certificate is less secure than a real certificate since there is nothing authoritative about a self-signed certificate. Malicious users may easily generate self-signed certificates you will not know which self-signed certificate is the legitimate one. In order to use a self-signed certificate, you must use a real domain name you own or a dynamic DNS domain name. I use Cloudflare as an example. Follow me on Twitter and Facebook 🤍 🤍 Description VLANs are ubiquitous in networking, and practically universal in enterprise networking equipment. While setting up a VLAN is conceptually the same, there will be variations between network vendor software in VLAN implementation, in addition to terminology. I've covered VLANs in OpenWrt quite a bit, but have not in BSD based deployments like OPNsense. In this episode, you'll learn how to set up your own VLAN in OPNsense 23.1. Since there are many similarities with OPNsense and pfSense, you can also apply these steps to pfSense in order to create VLANs there. Best of all, regardless of your software vendor, you'll get the same benefits of VLANs regardless, such as network segmentation, like with IoT devices. In addition, you'll learn the basics of creating your own network using a physical ethernet interface, just in case you don't want to use VLANs. The final part of the setting up a full network using OPNsense series the wireless access point configuration! Setting up the wireless AP is likely the easiest part of the configuration since a majority of the configuration has been completed in prior videos. Both OPNsense and the network switch need to have VLANs configured properly before VLANs can be used with the AP. I will be using the Grandstream 7660 as my example since it supports VLANs. I found it to be very simple to configure. Shout out to Jason's Lab (🤍 for providing me with the Grandstream as well as the Cisco switch! It helped me tremendously to create this video series! In this video, we show you how to install OPNsense firewall which is a fork of the popular pfSense firewall It's intended to be more open source and offer more frequent updates than pfSense So you'll find at the time of recording that while pfSense is on FreeBSD version 12, OPNsense is on version 13 But even though the major version of FreeBSD is different, OPNsense and pfSense should not be considered for a two vendor firewall design as chances are they will have the same vulnerability Now aside from the open source appeal, OPNsense also brings an interesting plug-in to the table called ZenArmor, which was previously known as Sensei This aims to give it next generation firewall capabilities And while you can install this for pfSense, you'd have to manage this via a cloud portal rather than locally, which for me is a deal breaker Useful links 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 Hardware Suggestions: Protectli Vault FW6A 🤍 NOTE: I am part of the Amazon affiliate program and may earn commission through Amazon website links if used. In this video, we show you how to install and configure the Zenarmor plugin in OPNSense We then review what you get access to for free versus what you need to pay for Zenarmor, formerly known as Sensei, is a plug-in for open source firewalls made by Sunny Valley which aims to turn your classic firewall into a next generation firewall (NG-FW) Basically, it provides better monitoring of your network traffic and a better way of controlling access at an application level Now, OPNSense has a big advantage over other firewalls because you'll be able to manage Zenarmor locally With other firewalls, you would have to use a cloud portal for managment which is a terrible idea for internal networks = SUPPORT THE CHANNEL Donate through Paypal: 🤍 Donate through Buy Me A Coffee: 🤍 Become a monthly contributor on Patreon: 🤍 Become a monthly contributor on YouTube: 🤍 MEDIA LINKS: Website - 🤍 Twitter - 🤍 Facebook - 🤍 Linkedin - 🤍 Instagram - 🤍 Steps Taken 1) Check the hardware requirements 🤍 2) Update OPNsense 3) Install Zenarmor plugin 4) Configure Zenarmor using the Wizard 5) Edit the security policy The free version only has a default policy A subscription allows you to add additional policies Chapters 00:00 Intro 00:48 Assumptions 00:59 Requirements 01:59 Update OPNSense 03:07 Install Zenarmor 05:26 Setup Wizard 10:47 Dashboard Page 15:28 Status Page 17:38 Reports Page 22:21 Policies Page 30:11 Configuration Page 36:47 Summary Credits LoveLife | Instrumental Prod.
