Macedonian Language TRAVEL HUSTLE REPEAT GEAR ► 🤍 MY FILM MAKING KIT ► 🤍 In this language episode, world traveler David Hoffmann sits down with Kate in the city of Bitola to show us what the Macedonian language sounds like. For those of you who don’t know about Macedonian, it is a South Slavic language spoken by about 2 million people. If you’re thinking it sounds similar to Bulgarian you’re right. Bulgarian is its closest dialect. Here, Kate and David go over some common words in English then in Macedonian to give you a taste for what it sounds like. If you’re headed to Macedonia, we encourage you to learn some of these frequently spoken words to help you meet new people and show them you’ve made the effort to learn some of the local words (although you’ll find that there are many English speakers throughout the country). We hope you enjoy this intro to the Macedonian language. Special thanks to Kate for participating in the video and to our sponsors, XShot and Macedonia Timeless. A Units of History Documentary on the Silver Shields - Veterans of the Macedonian Army! The first 100 people to go to 🤍 are going to get unlimited access for 1 week to try it out. You’ll also get 25% off if you want the full membership. In this animated documentary we follow the story of one of the most elite units of history, the Argyraspides : the Silver Shields. We begin the video by taking a look back at their institutional origins. This can be traced back to the early practice in Macedon of having bodyguard units of Hetairoi protect the king in court and on the battlefield. Eventually these would be expanded to form elite units of horse and foot companions during the reforms of Philip the second of Macedon. When Alexander the Great took over however he would extend the title of Foot Companion to the entire 6 unit block of Macedonian levy pikemen. The previous elite units which had held that title would now be referred to as the Hypaspitai, or shield bearers. 3,000 of these accompanied his army in the invasion of the Achaemenid Empire. They would take up the right flank in the pitched Battle of Granicus River, the Battle of Issus, and the Battle of Gaugamela. However they were an extremely flexible force that could also be embedded in the cavalry, sent over rough terrain to flank the enemy, and broken into small groups for special missions. In siege battles they also proved exceptional when it came to storming operations like in the Siege of Tyre and the Siege of Halicarnassus. After many years of fighting, these veteran Hypaspists would find them joining Alexander the Great on his campaigns into India. It would be here that they would finally adopt their famed Silver Shields and become the Argyraspides. We cover their history over the remainder of the campaigns of Alexander the Great and their subsequent involvement in the Wars of the Diadochi. This would involve many massive battles such as Paraitakene and Gabiene where they would continue their unbroken string of victories! Follow us to the end of the video to discover their ultimate fate. You can also learn more about the history of Macedon and the Macedonian army by checking out the rest of our content. More than 5,000 archaeological sites can be visited in this small country north of Greece. It is a country where you can still hear the silence. Life in the Macedonian villages is simple and without hustle and bustle. But traditions and original way of life are not signs of backwardness. Macedonia is also a land of contrasts. We will visit an orthodox monk who lives alone in an old monastery. Next to it, a modern vineyard is visited, which produces and sells historical wines with much commitment. Traditional grape varieties, which were already consumed here in the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans, are to be made popular again. The past and the future in Macedonia are close together. The deepest canyon in Europe, the continent's last primeval forests, important cultural sites and a unique diversity of species - it is an area with spectacular natural phenomena full of undiscovered beauty. Learn about the Macedonian Companion Cavalry who conquered the world for Alexander the Great in this in depth history documentary! Check out The Great Courses Plus to learn about daily life of Greek soldiers: 🤍 In this Units of History documentary we continue to explore the most famous ancient warriors from the past by turning to the kingdom of Macedon. We begin with the history of Macedon from the early Bronze Age as a small local power in the Balkans. According to legend its earliest kings had come from Argos and founded the Argead dynasty which was to rule Macedon for centuries. Initially this involved carving out a home in the lowland regions before slowly expanding the realm under great rulers like Amyntas 1. When the Persians arrived, Macedon initially became a vassal before being incorporated into the Achaemenid Empire following the Ionian Revolt. In the ensuing Greco Persian wars, Macedon fought with the Achaemenids such as at the battle of Platae but often helped both sides and ultimately turned on the easterners during their retreat. During the ensuing Peloponnesian War, the Kingdom of Macedon gained more power but was rocked by a series of assassinations, revolts, and invasions over the years which slowed its growth. It wasn't until the reign of Philip II that the Rise of Macedon would finally take place. This was made possible by the bold military reforms of Philip II which saw 600 Companion Cavalry take center stage of a new army. This force then subdued the surrounding regions of Greece, Thessaly, and Thrace making Macedon a formidable power that could now be turned against the Achaemenid Empire. When Philip II died, Alexander rose to the throne. After consolidating his realm, the young king them setoff to realize his father's dreams. 1800 Companion Cavalry would cross the Hellespont with the Macedonian Army. Their hammer and anvil strikes would prove to be one of the most effective tools in conquering the vast territories of the Achaemenid Empire. We cover the evolution of the Companions Cavalry and their fascinating service history over the course of the conquests of Alexander the Great. This includes their critical role in all major pitched battles: the Battle of the River Granicus, the Battle of Issus, the Battle of Gaugamela, and the Battle of Hydaspes. Bulgarian journalist taking an interview with a Macedonian in Skopje. The man lived for 40 years as an immigrant in Australia before coming back. In June 2021, Bulgaria again blocked the start of European Union accession talks with North Macedonia as part of a long-standing dispute over national identity. While Bulgaria argues that the Macedonians are part of the Bulgarian nation, the Macedonians argue that they have their own, separate national identity and language. So, what lies behind the dispute? Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. Here I take an informed look at International Relations with a focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries. SUBSCRIBE FOR FREE 🤍 JOIN THE CHANNEL 🤍 From the very first emergence of the Principality of Bulgaria, the Bulgarian state sought to take control of Macedonia. In the 1890s the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation (VMRO) led efforts to liberate the territory. This was followed by several Bulgarian attempts to take Macedonia, including during the Balkan Wars and during the First and Second World War. However, following the end of the Second World War, Macedonia became a separate territory within Yugoslavia, then becoming an independent state in 1991. However, while Bulgaria was willing to accept its sovereign statehood, it argued that the Macedonians could not be regarded as a separate people. Instead, they should be understood as Bulgarians and that they speak a dialect of Bulgarian, something that the Macedonians themselves now fundamentally reject. In response Bulgaria has now blocked the start of EU accession talks until the matter is resolved. Macedonia is a wonderful country to visit with its beautiful scenery, friendly people and delicious cuisine. As with any country, there are some things that you should avoid doing while there. Here are 10 things not to do while you are in Macedonia. 1. Don't Skip Declaring Valuables A lot of tourists don't declare all of their valuables when they are leaving the country. This can lead to huge fines and a lot of trouble. You can avoid this from happening by declaring everything that you think is valuable. 2. Don't Plan To Stay The Entire Day In Ohrid You may think that Ohrid is filled with a lot to do. However, it's only a small part of what Macedonia has to offer. You are better off only spending a little amount of time in this area and spending the majority of your time in Bitola. 3. Don't Pass On The Rakija This drink is similar to brandy but even more delicious. Make sure you don't pass on trying it because you think that it's just like other drinks you've had before. It's best when taken as a shot as it can be very potent. 4. Don't Order Fries Most of the food in Macedonia is good except for the fries. They tend to be soggy and lack taste. Don't order the fries while you're here, and save those calories for something else. 5. Don't Break The Alcohol Rules There's some interesting alcohol rules in Macedonia. During the winter months, you can't purchase it after 7 p.m. or 9 p.m. when it's summer. Make sure you keep these rules in mind so that you don't inadvertently break them. 6. Don't Pass On The Markets The markets are absolutely incredible. You can find a lot of organic fruits and vegetables here, and the locals are very friendly. Make sure you don't leave Macedonia without visiting a market or two. 7. Don't Forget To Exchange Your Money You will need to exchange your money as the local shops won't take your dollars. Denars will be accepted pretty much everywhere in Macedonia, and you can get them in exchange offices. If you can find an ATM, you can withdrawal denars there as well. 8. Don't Get Offended By Questions From The Locals The locals seem to want to know everything about visitors. Don't be offended by some of the questions that they ask. They are just trying to get to know you, and nothing is really off limits to them. 9. Don't Use Your Cell Without The Proper Sim Card Many tourists try to use their cellular phone only to find that it doesn't work. Fortunately, you can easily get a SIM card to put in your phone that will allow you to have service. All you need to do is show your passport at one of the shops that sells them in order to get one. 10. Don't Buy Bottled Water Everywhere You Go The water is safe to drink in Macedonia and pretty tasty. Because of this, there's no need to buy bottled water whenever you're thirsty. However bottled water is always safest, whenever you're away. Where do you want to know what not to do in next? Comment below! Get more Tips here! 🤍
Macedonian is spoken by about 2 million people, principally in the Republic of Macedonia, where it is the only nationally official language, as well as in pockets of Eastern Europe's Macedonia region, which includes parts of Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo, and Serbia. A South Slavic language, it is closely related to Bulgarian, Slovene, and the Serbo-Croatian languages, and more distantly so to Polish, Czech, and Russian.
