Officials announced Wednesday that they found a man and woman, both from Yuba City, who disappeared earlier this month after a day trip they never returned from. The Nevada County Sheriff's Office said it got a call from the Gridley Police Department in Butte County just after 5 p.m., explaining that a man called 911 to report a vehicle that appeared to have crashed near Highway 20 and Poker Flats Road in Penn Valley. Officers from the California Highway Patrol responded with deputies to that area, the sheriff's office said. There, the man pointed out to them the vehicle that was down an embankment. It was a busy Friday as football teams across the Sacramento region kicked off the season in triple-digit heat. Prior to kick-off, teams took measures to keep players cool and safe from overheating. Jeff Harter, athletic director at Rocklin High School, said the school moved practices to the early mornings, extended water breaks and when necessary, the pads come off. “Soon as we touch 103 degrees, we take the pads down and we’re going to straight t-shirt, shorts and a helmet,” Harter said. New name, same virus. California health officials Friday confirmed they are avoiding using the term "monkeypox" and will now refer to it as "mpox" or “MPX.” California Department of Public Health Director Dr. Tomás Aragón did not give a specific reason for the change in a teleconference with reporters on Friday. The change comes as the World Health Organization has called for a new term for the virus to make it less stigmatizing and discriminatory. Earth's global average temperature is rising but the rate of that warming is different in various regions of the world. Earlier this week, scientists revealed that the Arctic region may be warming four times faster than the rest of the planet. That warming is already having an effect on the ecosystem. Dr. Roman Dial is a professor of biology and mathematics at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage. Dial's research focuses on the white pine tree population. He says these trees are steadily moving farther north into the barren tundra of northern Alaska. The race for State Controller does not traditionally get a ton of attention during an election cycle, but this year is different. Republican candidate, Lanhee Chen, was the only member of his party to get more votes than his Democratic opponents in a statewide race during the primary election in June. He's hoping to be the first Republican to be elected to statewide office in California for the first time in two decades. With less than three months until election day, where he'll face Democrat Malia Cohen, he stopped by Sacramento on Wednesday. If you find yourself along the Lower American River Parkway, specifically near the Lower Sailor Bar and the Nimbus Basin, you'll notice plenty of construction crews and piles of gravel. The Water Forum is currently working to create a habitat for native chinook salmon and steelhead trout as they prepare to return to the region for their annual migration. The organization started projects like this in 2008, and enhances the habitats nearly every year. The projects are necessary to enhance fish spawning beds and improve the habitat for juvenile fish-rearing. Gov. Gavin Newsom originally did not think he’d be able to attend the 26th annual Lake Tahoe Summit but ended up being a last-minute attendee of the bipartisan gathering of California and Nevada lawmakers, and community members. The governor arrived halfway through the event dressed in jeans and a white button up. For a short while, he stood listening near the entrance of the amphitheater at the Sand Harbor Nevada State Park before settling into a chair in the audience. Climate change is a topic that has dominated discussions at this summit year after year. The governor’s appearance comes days after he sent a request to state lawmakers with a series of climate-related actions he wants passed before the legislative session ends Aug. 31.
