Waves F6 This is a plugin that Ariel discovered recently, and has quickly become one of his favorite of all time. The reason for this is because of the versatility and how easy it is to choose the side chain source for individual bands. 2. Waves Vitamin Sonic Enhancer The Waves Vitamin is a plugin that Ariel feels gets overlooked a lot, but that he has a lot of fun with. It is essentially adding harmonics to different frequency bands, so you can really shape the tone of an instrument. It adds harmonics that weren't there and helps you to beef up your sound without using EQ or compression. 3. Plugin Alliance Maag EQ4 This plugin is a secret weapon of many top mixers (although it may not be a secret anymore). The hardware version of this plugin had an Air Band, which is also available on the plugin version, which was used to bring a lot of clarity to individual tracks, as well as subgroups or entire mixes, and it colors the sound in a really unique way. This is a plugin that you really have to put your ears on. You can't just "set it and forget it", you have to really listen to what it is doing, because it can easily become harsh. However, when it is done right, you can add a bit of edge or really just open up the sound. 4. Soundtoys Decapitator This is basically a saturation tool that adds harmonics and distortion. It emulates a lot of outboard gear, their characteristics, and the tone and the way it shapes the sound. Ariel says this is a great shaping tool for when you beed a little more grit, distortion, or character. This plugin contains five different saturation sounds, as well as a "Punish" knob, so there is a lot you can do to shape the sound. It is great for adding a professional feel to a lot of your productions and mixes, in a way that adds color and tone. A secret weapon of a lot of the top guys is how you color sounds to make them really jump out of the speakers, and this plugin helps you do that. 5. UAD Pultec EQP-1A This plugin is featured in both of Ariel's courses with Pro Mix Academy, and he talks about it extensively. One of the great things about this plugin is its ability to tighten the low end, while also boosting the low end. This sounds like an oxymoron, but this plugin is amazing for helping you get fantastic top end and low end. The Mäag EQs are a brand of units that have a staple in mixing engineers hearts, including mine. I use these units for a ton of things when it comes to boosting and sometimes radically altering the sound of sounds for a more saturated color. In the video, I'm using the plugin as it relates to vocals but don't limit its powers to that. Use it for drums, background vocals, synths, anything that needs a special touch. *Tip* Don't be scared to crank the bands. These curves boost frequencies unlike anything you've used. Just be sure to scale back the input on the EQ2 with a gain plugin or something similar if you don't like distortion! WHY buy a MAAG EQ2 after watching what the KIRCHHOFF EQ can do? .. no joke ..THEY MEAN BUSINESS!! I'll say it now... three body technology weren't dicking around when they created their kirchhoff eq. I didnt put much interest into the analog modelled curves it offered.. and I was an absolute idiot for not doing so!! Just look at how close the kirchhoff blue eq is to the plugin alliance / uad maag eq2. My name is Paul Third and I am a Scottish youtuber / audio engineer / mixing engineer / audio geek. #Maag Audio EQ4: 🤍 The first thing we see is that the freq response is slightly altered. This may seem odd to digital users but an almost flat response is an impressive achievement in the #analog world and this plug is an exact recreation of a real #hardware. The second thing is that activating the AIR band produces an increase in the freqs of this band even when AIR GAIN is at 0. Use this in your advantage if you like to increase the clarity of a track naturally and discreetly. Changing the position of the frequency selector changes the position of the boost but does not change its gain. Note that although the Q-Clone display only reaches 16 kHz we can still see the influence of 40kHz in this area. The SUB band boost or cut 10Hz. This band is commonly used to reduce inaudible rumble but can also be useful to process sound effects for large and specialized sound systems such as cinema. As specified in the manual, part of what turned the hardware into a mitic device is that any boost affects the rest of the bands, this is not desired but rather a by-product of a clever design created to obtain a top sound quality and can be matched with LEVEL TRIM. The next 3 bands are bell-shaped and can cut or boost in 4 areas that are pretty unique in the world of analog EQs. -40Hz is below the root freqs of for example the kick but it can give it a different type of fat than, say, a 60Hz band. -160Hz is pretty much the main area of the electric bass, a little above the most known 120Hz. Also here lies the body of electric guitars and many other pulsed string instruments. -650 Hz is a mystical area in many instruments, it can sound very good or very bad, we can't think of a more exact explanation, only the suggestion to use it at discretion, it always leaves us surprised because it is almost never what we think... -2.5 kHz if it is clearly a presence frequency, many associate it with the clarity of the male voice and guitars. The most important thing is to know that differently from the previous bands this is a filter shelf, that is, it increases or cuts from around 2.5k up. -The AIR BAND is a shelf filter as well, it is the only band that allows to select the freq. The last position, 40k, goes far beyond the human hearing that usually goes up to 18-20k. As we saw in a previous video (Watch "Low BOOST below HPF explained": 🤍 the ends of the filter reach the audible spectrum, making this band a very special tool. *All the music featured in this channel is our own unless otherwise stated. The Maag Audio EQ4 is a musical EQ, not a surgical EQ, making it ideal for sweetening tracks. The Maag Audio EQ4 plugin has exceptionally low phase shift across all EQ adjustments, which helps maintain the integrity of your mix’s original sound while enhancing the “Airy” frequencies. The Air Band interacts with the 5 band pass EQs to tonally sculpt your tracks from top to bottom with transparency and top end presence. The Maag Audio EQ2 provides some of the same audio magic as the EQ4, but it also adds features which make it the perfect companion to the EQ4. While the EQ4’s wide, musical control over 4 frequency bands make it the best EQ on the market for sweetening your tracks, the EQ2’s second band offers greater control over center frequencies and bandwidth selections, making it a great tool for fixing problems or creating more radical changes. The EQ2 also has the legendary Air Band like the EQ4 but offers a 15kHz band not found on the EQ4. The EQ2 includes 11 Low-Mid Frequency bell selections (6 wide and 5 tight), increasing its frequency selections compared to the EQ4, which has only wide bell selections. This allows the EQ2 to zoom in on problem areas in a manner that the EQ4 can’t.
