The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers in which a given number is the addition of the two numbers before it. So, if you start with 0, the next number will be 1, followed by 1, followed by 2, followed by 3 and so on. As you can see, every number in this series or sequence is obtained by adding the two preceding numbers. This simple series of numbers is referred to as the Fibonacci sequence for Fibonacci series. And individual numbers in this sequence are often called Fibonacci numbers. To the uninitiated, it may just seem like a series of numbers, but the Fibonacci sequence has been discovered and rediscovered in various forms, not only in mathematics, but also in nature and our everyday lives. There’s another exciting offshoot of the Fibonacci sequence - the golden ratio. Seashells are one of the most common examples of the golden spiral in nature. Did you know numerology and science intersect? You may have heard about fractals, the Fibonacci sequence, and the Golden Ratio. But how are they related? And what can they tell us about the patterns we find in nature? We look at these questions in this video for numerology science. In this video we explore 3 beautiful and mysterious mathematical phenomena and the intersection between numerology and science: 1. The Fibonacci sequence If you start with the numbers 0 and 1, and add each new number to the one before it, you get a list that looks like this: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584, 4181, 6765, 10946, 17711, 28657, 46368, 75025, 121393, 196418, 317811… and it goes on forever. This might look like a random list of numbers, but it’s not. This sequence appears everywhere in nature, and it happens so unexpectedly, and so often that there’s even a scientific journal dedicated to studying it. 2. The Golden Ratio If you divide nearly any Fibonacci number by the one before it in the sequence, you get a number that approaches 1.618033988… and it goes on forever. The Ancient Greeks called this number “Phi” but it’s more widely known as the “Golden Ratio.” And much like the Fibonacci Sequence, the Golden Ratio also appears everywhere all around us. 3. Fractals Mathematician Benoit Mandlebrot came up with a simple equation. If you follow his formula, it can produce beautiful images where you can zoom into any small part of the image and find that it resembles the whole. Much like the Fibonacci Sequence, and the Golden Ratio, we also see Fractals everywhere and all around us. Let's explore numerology and science. Let me show you some awesome numerical patterns within "the golden ratio", beginning with a story about this number from my childhood, and building to a whole web of connections it has with the "Fibonacci sequence", the "Lucas numbers", and more! Many people associate this number/ratio with geometry and shapes, but there are tons of numerical traits that make it special too! This episode covers some of my favorite numerical aspects and doesn't cover the geometric aspects, which I will cover at another point in the future. The golden ratio will also play a key role in a future episode about irrational numbers. And in another future episode, we will meet some other "metallic" numbers such as the "silver ratio" and "bronze ratio"! By the way, the symbol I am using for the golden ratio is the greek letter "phi", which is used for a few things in math, one of which is this number. "Phi" is pronounced more like "fee" according to the sources I've read, although you'll hear some people pronounce it like "fye".
